While top tier build publication is an excellent reality for those who are experienced with Grim Dawn and have a huge repository of legendary set gear, the majority of builds shared with the community are complex end-game builds that often leave new players in the dust, confused and wondering where to start, how to progress, and most importantly: how to equip.

To help new and returning players, I have put together a collection of ten detailed build guides that are fantastic starters, can do nearly all content, and are capable of farming their own end-game gear.

This means the builds perform excellently on self-found equipment and can farm ultimate to acquire the best-in-slot legendary items. This build delivers, and is great at boss farming! Gun builds are some of the most fun in Grim Dawn, blasting targets from a distance and piercing hoards of enemies, often killing them because they can get close. And while everything is bleeding to death, you get the beat on larger targets with your giant 2-handed weapon. The build has excellent AoE and solid single-target damage, and once your devotions are complete, it rips through all of the core content with ease. Your pets namely Skeletons murder everything as you run through the content and pick up the juicy loot.

Once the regeneration from Blood of Dreeg and the Devotions is established, you rarely have to recast your pets except during tough boss fights.

As with most pet builds, ground-based AoE damage is the most dangerous and can quickly kill all of your little buddies, which is why resists are very important.

The ground-based Aether damage from AoM can be quite challenging, but once you get the pet Aether resistances up, they do very well.

Many players will recast skeletons to get a balanced collection of all three while others prefer pure warriors or archers; but this can be difficult to achieve with the RNG-nature of the build.

I believe this is one of the fastest leveling builds in the game. Your Totems and Wind Devils decimate everything around you, and the general technique is to drop them and run off while they murder the entire screen.

The good news is your Wind Devils love to chase every living thing, and your Totems will shock anything in their proximity all while your Storm Box continually zaps tagged targets. This build actually levels rather quickly because pierce does fantastic damage. As with all melee builds, the biggest problem is usually ground AoE, which we have to stay out of. Just make sure you keep your resistances maxed stun resist is very important with this build and Pneumatic Burst up at all times for Shadow Dance, which may be one of the best survival skills in the game.

This build can be a bit slow while leveling and there may be instances where you have to run away to escape AoE damage on the ground. There may also be issues with AoE damage, and it could feel like it takes forever to kill things. For bosses that like to freeze or shock you, be sure to have some Ointment buffs ready to counter the affects. AAR is quite strong, easily destroys all trash and melts most bosses.

You may also put some points on cunning if you want more offensive ability.

For those who want to play like a Grim Reaper, I believe this is one of the closest builds that you can get. Grim Reaper is a melee type build that can deal heavy amounts of damage while converting a percentage of it to health. Tip: To look exactly like a Grim Reaper, refer to an illusionist to transform your two-hand weapon into a scythe of your choice, your head armor into a hoodie of your choice, and finally, your chest armor into a robe of your choice.

Since this build is a melee type, having high amounts of physique is your main priority. Spirit is your next priority because your main attacks are magical damage. Getting some cunning is also a good idea for better offensive ability. For damage types, vitality, vitality decay, and aether are your top priorities.

Cold and physical are secondary choices. I put a single point on Shadow Strike so that I have the ability to dash quickly from one enemy to another. Little points on spirit is required until you can wear the best amulets and rings. Primary stats of your equipment should be physical and internal trauma damage. Your main damage dealer here is Eye of Reckoning with the help of Judgement and Guardians of Empyrion. Retaliation stats complements really well with Oathkeeper because the mastery has skills that gets additional damage from retaliation.

If possible, assign everything on physique.The first expansion released October, brought some interesting features like new classes and the entertaining Fashion Dawn. The customization in Grim Dawn is immense. You can customize and tweak every aspect about your character, when you first level up, or later. You have the spiritual guide, an NPC who can reset your skill points and devotion points, so you can spend them elsewhere.

All of your choices can be changed later in higher difficulties. Be it faction, or some random trader you murdered on the road, you have a second and third chance to rectify your choices. You get one precious attribute point each level, which you can spend on Physique, Cunning, or Spirit. Attributes gives small bonus to damage, health, or mana, but their main value is being a requirement for armors and weapons. Then you spend one more hour, and your are level Your two classes increase your attributes passively, which get you the points required to equip things.

It decreases the need to spread your attributes points around and gives you a better idea of where you really need to spend your points.

It not only gives flat numbers in health which can be multiplied by various waysbut the best defensive armor requires so many points spent on Physique — maybe even All points in it. Leave the last ten or twenty points free until you get to Max level and have all the equipment you need.

Before diving into specific mastery combos and skill load outs, first let's clarify what we mean by "best". Our best builds have these qualities:. Based on personal play style preference, this is my current favorite build, although your mileage may vary if you don't care for melee combat or using a ton of pet summons. There's a dual focus here, first on summoning creatures to keep the enemy busy, then on two handed weapon attacks with internal trauma damage.

It may seem strange to have two caster classes focused on physical attacks, but trust me, it works wonders. Internal trauma damage bypasses armor and continues dealing damage over time, making it very helpful with big tanky bosses.

Be sure to pick a devotion constellation tied to whatever 2 handed weapon type you end up using Rhowan's Scepter gives a ton of internal trauma damage for maces. The goal with this build is to always have 8 skeletons, a briarthorn, a blight fiend, and a primal spirit to thin out the enemy while you go to town with a 2 handed weapon. Of course there are ways to tweak the skills if you want to focus more on pets than melee attacks, as Reaping Strike and Necrotic Edge can be swapped for maxing out the Blight Fiend and Briarthorn upgrade skills instead.

So long as you buy faction items or equip items that that increase poison resistance, you'll even do very well in the harder Ashes Of Malmouth content like the Ancient Grove sealed dungeon. First up, the only place you are really going to struggle is with Father Kymon near the end of Forgotten Gods, who will be difficult to overcome with this build on epic and ultimate modes.

Since Kymon can one shot many players with melee hits, you want to stay far away and let your pets do the work, or equip an item that gives you an extra ranged power to use while you hide in the area's entrance.

Second, while this build will see you surrounded by a horde of pets, unfortunately it doesn't have quite enough summoning potential to actually unlock the Pet Hoarder achievement As a brand new mastery, the player base is still trying to figure out the best secondary class and skill load out for the Oathkeeper, and many players are convinced only Soldier or Demolitionist are viable options.

The Oathkeeper has excellent synergy with poison and acid when paired with the Nighblade mastery. Ghoul also works well, since it gives you some healing while attacking capability for survival.

Switching between Amastara's Blade Burst and the Righteous Fervor attacks can result in crazy damage to just about any enemy as poison and acid eat away at health. Don't forget to summon your Guardian so he can also go out and perform area burst acid attacks!

The main downside here is a lack of crit percentagebut with how much poison, acid, bleed, and internal trauma damage you will be dealing, it isn't that much of a weakness. A lot of the pet builds were sadly diminished with the Forgotten Gods expansion, but this one remains viable if you play it right.

A counterpoint to the Ritualist, this mastery combo is mostly about summoning creatures and letting them do the damage, while then lowering enemy resistances so your summons can tear at them with damage types like acid, cold, lightning, etc. For devotion points, Ulzuin's Torch is a great idea that can be bound to any of your summon skills, as it eventually gives you the chance to randomly call down a high damage meteor swarm with any basic attack. The main weakness is that your character won't be directly dealing a ton of damageand of course you don't have a ton of defense. Just make sure to always be on the lookout for any equipment that gives pet bonuses, elemental damage bonuses, or debuffs the enemy. Your best bet here is to take some time to plan out a devotion path ahead of time, rather than randomly putting points and hoping you end up with a viable build. To break this down into manageable chunks, here's what you should ask yourself before picking a devotion path:.

That's just one potential path though, and there are many, many others. Not sure how to get new Devotion points? You need to restore shrines scattered across the world, and remember that you can complete shrines multiple times on each difficulty level. Here's where to find them all:. Like all the other item drops, relic blueprints are totally randomized, so unfortunately I can't tell you "build this relic then that relic" for the most DPS based on your mastery combo.

For instance, if you are playing a melee focused character, building a relic like Arbiter gives you a reliable ranged attack to use against bosses who can easily take out close combat enemies.

If you tend to get hit a lot because you don't have a ton of pets, relics like Corruption or Equilibrium might be worthwhile instead as a form of crowd control.
